Local businesses and citizens in Loudon County came together on August 30 and 31 to remember those who have died or suffered permanent injury due to drug overdose, and to support the survivors and fighters of ongoing addiction.

About 50 people attended a candlelight vigil, to admire the survivors, support the fighters, and honor the taken. This took place on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 8 pm at the Fountain in Downtown Loudon. We created a thumbprint "Family Tree” in remembrance of the lives lost.

A balloon release was held at the Municipal Building in Lenoir City at 9 am on Saturday, August 31, 2019. In memory of those who have lost the battle to addiction, 5 balloons were released and reeled back in. This number represents the average number of lives lost on a daily basis in the state of Tennessee due to an overdose.

Our ROPS coordinator, Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist, Marissa Valentine was available to discuss the use of NARCAN (Naloxone Hci). Lenoir City Mayor, Tony R. Aikens and Loudon City Mayor, Jeff Harris were there in support of this cause. By holding an event this year, the people of Loudon County are joining themselves to a global movement for understanding, compassion, and change. Local businesses and residents showed their support by placing a purple wreath on their door, flying purple balloons, tying a purple ribbon to their mailbox or tree, or wearing purple. Broadway Flower Shop, generously donated the balloons and candles for these events.
