Operation Dry Water Focuses on Prevention & Boating Under the Influence

Roane County Anti-Drug Coalition focuses on the prevention of underage drinking and boating under the influence (BUI) due to our close proximity to Watts Bar Lake. Local law enforcement participate in Operation Dry Water which is a year-round boating under the influence awareness and enforcement campaign whose mission is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug related accidents and fatalities through increased recreational boater awareness. Operation Dry Water's heightened awareness and enforcement three day weekend takes place annually around the July 4th holiday.

RCADC staff provides local marinas with swag bags which are given to individuals renting boats during the July 4th holiday weekend. Included in the bags is information reminding boaters that alcohol is even more dangerous on the water than on land because the motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and spray accelerates a drinker's impairment. These stressors can cause fatigue that makes a boat operator's coordination, judgment and reaction time decline even faster. This year RCADC also had two billboards installed reminding everyone of the dangers posed by drinking on the water and that alcohol is prohibited for anyone under the age of 21.
