Overdose deaths are something that affects everyone and something that has deeply impacted Tipton County. Drug-Free Tipton partnered with several community partners for Overdose Awareness Day to not only raise awareness of the rising epidemic but also to love and support those community members who have lost someone.  

Their first event was held outside of the Tipton County Courthouse. A proclamation declaring August 31st as Overdose Awareness Day in Tipton County was signed by Tipton County Executive Jeff Huffman and read by the Tipton County Sheriff, Shannon Beasley. This event was well attended by the local city mayor, police chiefs and officers, fire chiefs, county employees, Baptist Memorial Hospital CEO and staff, Sheriff’s Office deputies and detective, and several other community members. A table was set with resources such as lock boxes and redline cards for anyone to take.  

The second event of the day was a memorial vigil on the steps of Covington First United Methodist Church. Candles were lit, bells were rung, and a moment of silence was taken in remembrance of those who have lost their lives. During this event, community members were able to get Narcan trained and pick up a lockbox containing different resources.  

These events were a beautiful representation of the support and love that the people of Tipton County have towards one another. Together they all play their part in reducing the number of overdose deaths.
