The Upper Cumberland Council on Children and Youth (UCCCY) presented a lunch and learn screening of the film "Paper Tigers" on November 13, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Regional Health Building 1100 England Drive, in Cookeville. Sharing the film is part of our Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Awareness, and promotion of Trauma Informed Communities work. "Paper Tigers" follows a year in the life of students at Lincoln Alternative High School in Walla Walla, Washington. The school changed its approach to disciplining its students after the principal learned about the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study. Principal Jim Sporleder gleaned a nugget of neuroscience from an educational conference in 2010 that "stressed brains can't learn". The film captures the pain, danger, beauty and hopes of struggling teens and the teachers armed with a new science and fresh approaches that are changing their lives for the better. Despite the turmoil in their home lives, the teens find the support they need to make academic progress and find less destructive ways of coping. An important message is how just one person can make a difference.A discussion was held after the film. Pizza was served.
