Monroe Co. Participates in IOAD

In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the Monroe County Prevention & Wellness Coalition hosted their first annual “Smash the Stigma Community Water Balloon Fight.” While meant to bring awareness to substance misuse and overdose, this event was also meant to be a community bonding event, with emphasis on our youth and first responders. Local resources, free medication lock boxes, overdose prevention training, and organizations focusing on mental health were on site. The community was able to visit these resource vendors, food trucks and take their kids to the “touch a truck” area before and after the water balloon fight.

The “Smash the Stigma Community Water Balloon fight” was a great battle between community bystanders lining the streets and their first responders ready to battle from their vehicles! Water balloons (hundreds) were thrown, hoses were used, and a fun (and wet!) time was had by all! It ended with a small battle between our fire departments and law enforcement! Ten (10) departments participated and are already looking forward to next year’s event! Join them next year, and don’t forget to BYOB (bring your own balloons, that is)!!
